Motor Build Time!

So we got the motor back from the machine shop and it’s now ready for reassembly. I’ll post some pictures of the process below because who doesn’t love looking at engine rebuilds?! To keep it pretty simple for my car we did Mahle forged pistons, upgraded King main & rod bearings, ARP head studs, and new JE head gaskets. In addition to that we added the Killer B Oil Pick-up, a new timing belt kit, KS Tech Air Pump Delete Kit, and then finished it off with the GNP crank pulley that we won at the 2015 Hypermeet raffle. Everything went back together smoothly and it was a fun experience getting to put my own motor back together that I would be driving every day. With the re-assembly complete I prepped the car to drop the engine back into the bay. I definitely have to give a huge shout out to Chris for guiding me through the process and giving me the chance to get my hands dirty. Picture explosion commence!

While we were reassembling the motor, a customer and friend stopped by with a fellow Subaru enthusiast who was in need of an STi top mount for his turbo upgrade on his FXT. I immediately saw this as an opportunity for both him and I to benefit from since I had been eyeing an upgraded TMIC for awhile. Ever since I got the car I dreamed of one day putting the beautiful GrimmSpeed TMIC in it, and this was my chance to get it on before the motor even started. After selling the stock STi TMIC I called up the guys at Grimmspeed to order one of their TMIC and decided to go with the black thermal dispersant coating version as it not only looks better, in my opinion, but should perform better as well. I plan on staying top mount for the duration of owning this car, more on this reasoning later as I move forward with further upgrades. Along with the GrimmSpeed TMIC I also went with the GrimmSpeed Y-Pipe kit as the stock one was sold with the top mount so I kind of had no choice. Before putting the TMIC in I decided to use some of the Grimmspeed Rally Blue paint and spray their logo with this onto the TMIC, let me know what you think of the end result?

I know I said in the last post that I would be talking about what some of the future upgrades for this car are going to be, but after having a while to think it over and realizing all the different paths there are to take this car, I’m going to need a little more time to figure out which way I’m going to go. In the next post I’ll discuss the initial start-up and break-in period, stay tuned!

  • I was at touge tuning back in March to purchase the cam lock tool ,crank pulley tool etc. Little that I know you sold me the tools now I see you using them on your own car that’s great. I am about to put pull my engine by the end of June I have been waiting to have time and good weather my problem is that I had some one change my valve cover seals 3 years ago but it appear to be leaking again plus i see some other leaking issues on top of engine to the point where I can’t tell where is leaking from any tips will be appreciated. So I decided to pull the engine and change all the seals that I can change. Great job on the build.
